CHAPTER 40
The Dorfmans and Al Baron
Paul Dorfman was a former prizefighter who fought under the name of âRed Dorfman.â He was managed by Sam Pian, who also managed Barney Ross, a former welterweight and middleweight champion.
In 1955 and 1956, Dorfman was a guest at the Riviera in Las Vegas, then co-owned by Ross Miller, Sid Wyman, and Charles Rich. The hotelâs ledger sheets showed that Dorfman was not charged for the rooms he stayed in.
Wyman and Rich had a great love of sports, and Rich once owned a boxing gym in St. Louis. This mutual interest in boxing and sports fueled a long friendship between Dorfman, Wyman, and Rich. It developed over the years and became mutually prosperous. It is conceivable and probable that this friendship led to the start of the Dunesâ association with Jake Gottlieb, who was the landlord.
In the late 1950s, the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Improper Activities in Labor and Management investigated questionable activities involving Dorfman and the Teamsters pension fund.
Launched in 1957, the committee operated for more than three years. Because its chairman throughout was John L. McClellan, it often was called the McClellan Committee. Robert Kennedy was its chief counsel. Investigators included Pierre E.G. Salinger, Martin S. Uhlmann, John P. Findlay, James J.P. McShane, and Richard G. Sinclair. During the committeeâs hearings in 1959, Kennedy stated:
âMr. Chairman, over the period of the past day and a half, we have been developing a number of points that we wish to go into further today. There are four major points we have gone into. The first which we have established is that there was collusion in the awarding of the insurance for the Central States Conference of Teamsters, and that is shown through the documents that have been placed in the record here.
âSecond, there was collusion in the awarding of the contract of the Michigan Conference of Teamsters, which is shown from the documents and, for instance, the fact that the bid was submitted to the Michigan Conference of Teamsters the day after the award was made, submitted from Allen Dorfmanâs company.
âThird, right from the beginning, there were excessive commissions paid for both the Central Conference of Teamsters and for the Michigan Conference of Teamsters.
âFourth, there is the matter that climaxes all of this, that between 1952 and 1954 the cost to the Michigan Conference of Teamsters and to the Central Conference of Teamsters was increased. The commissions to Allen Dorfman were increased and the benefits to the members of the Central Conference of Teamsters and the Michigan Conference of Teamsters were decreased on three separate occasions.
âAll of these matters were handled with the help and assistance and direction of Mr. James Hoffa. When we had our witnesses at the beginning, we developed the fact
